Elms School

Maths

Mathematics is a core subject and is delivered across all Key Stages at Elms School. Our pupils use  the Collins scheme of Mathematics in Key Stages 1,2 and 3. This builds pupils key skills and provides them with a firm foundation on which  to progress. It also prepares them  for  qualifications and examinations in Years 9, 10 and 11.

Elms School promotes Functional Skills as this enables pupils to relate Maths to real life situations and the relevancy it has to their own lives. Practical tasks are undertaken and Problem Solving is actively encouraged.

The Mathematics Department is well resourced,  with games and ICT playing a key role in their learning.

Formal examinations commence in Year 9 with Entry Level 3 in Pure Maths and Functional Skills allowing all pupils to gain two qualifications. This provides a stepping stone to Functional Skills Levels 1 and 2 which have a GCSE equivalent. Those pupils who are able are encouraged to also sit a GCSE in Mathematics as well.

Learning is personalised and pupils are encouraged to sit examinations when they are ready rather than waiting for a specific year. This allows them to be challenged and attain their full potential.

At Elms School we aim to make Mathematics real and relevant for all our young people and give them skills for life, We are offering a new whole school Maths problem solving day in Term 5!
