Duke of Edinburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh award is offered to our year 9, year 10 and 11 pupils. Currently, pupils are achieving the Bronze level award with the opportunity to progress and achieve the Silver award.
The course develops our pupils’ life skills and personal independence, gives them a sense of identity, responsibility, leadership and team working skills. The award creates opportunities to enable participants to discover new skill or enhance a skill they already have. They gain a greater awareness of their own strengths and provide the ability to learn new talents.
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition: All pupils are required to complete a two day expedition with an overnight stay. In preparation for the expedition component pupils are taught:
- Navigation skills
- Map reading and grid references
- Compass reading skill
- Pre-expedition fitness training
- How to prepare and cook nutritionally balanced meals
- How to cook on a Trangia stove
- Organising and packing a backpack
- Camp craft-assembling a tent
- First aid training resulting in a ‘Basic First Aid Qualification’
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Skill : All pupils will be given the opportunity to choose an activity of their choice resulting in them following that activity for a period of 12-26 weeks. Skills section activities should improve self-esteem and confidence, develop practical and social skills, develop organisational skills and demonstrate how to set and rise to a challenge.
All skills offer a variety of learning and outcome depending on their choice. Within school we can offer the following selection of activities:

- Forest Skills
- DIY
- Animal Care (chickens)
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Physical : All pupils will be given the opportunity to choose a physical activity from the list below. The aim of the Physical section is to inspire young people to achieve greater physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle through participation and improvement in physical activity. Their programme will reflects their own individual starting point and abilities, which they will enjoy and show commitment to for a period of 12-26 weeks.
All Physical activities offer a variety of learning and outcome depending on their choice. Within school we can offer the following selection of activities:

- Tobogganing
- Swimming
- Bike Riding
- Skiing
- Assault Course
- Football Coaching
- Badminton
- Table Tennis
- Rugby
- Cricket
- Running
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Volunteering : All pupils must regularly commit to a volunteering activity over a set period. The aim of this section is to inspire young people to make a difference within their communities or to an individual’s life and develop compassion by giving service to others. To complete their Volunteering section, participants need to identify a local need from any of the following categories: - Helping people - Community action and raising awareness - Coaching, teaching and leadership - Working with the environment or animals - Helping a charity or community organisation.
